Hi! I’m Tanner.
The Mighty Type has grown over the years from a personal blog to an expanded website featuring a shop and my portfolio.
I grew up in the small farm town of Vernon, Texas before making the move to study architecture in upstate New York. Five years and a Bachelor of Architecture later, I relocated to Michigan and received my Master of Urban Design in 2022. I'm always writing, designing, and making; this is the best outlet to do and share what I love.
The Type is proudly queer + latine owned and operated, and we appreciate all of your early and continued support. Thank you!
Design
I design, write, create and collaborate.
With training and experience in architecture, urban design, and graphic design, I’m passionate about uncovering and expanding the potential roles design can play in forming built environments of belonging.
Research interests include social infrastructure, spatial justice, design methodology, and epistemology. I’m most inspired by the uncommon, irregular, or otherwise queer practices and approaches to design thinking.
I often draw upon my intersectional identities to translate ideas and find nuance across scales or contexts. My lived experience in both urban and rural contexts, as well as my ability to work and translate across the architectural and urban scales, informs much of my work, and I’ve found it to be one of my greatest strengths.
Each of these projects imagines the future of the design disciplines as inherently capable of enacting social justice through spatial transformation and methodological transgression. I’m always aiming to tease out potentials of design as a tangible, flexible vector. My design obsessions aim to expand the limits of process through irregular methodologies of hopeful inquiry. Threaded through each of these efforts is my design purpose.
